In recent news, Liverpool legend Paul McCartney gave a ‘thumbs up’ to the iconic building, rejoicing that St Luke’s “is a place that encourages people to express themselves”. We will be supporting his statement in our celebration of the regeneration of the church; by rediscovering the diversity of the landmark and continuing the work of various other companies who too have helped st Luke’s church.
St Luke’s Church remained largely unused until 2007 when community music group Urban Strawberry Lunch became the artists in residence, bringing the space back to life through the arts and culture. Urban Strawberry Lunch split up in 2014 but the Artistic Director Ambrose Reynolds continues to keep the space open (with the help of an army of fellow volunteers) every afternoon (except Mondays and Tuesdays). The space hosts regular health & wellbeing classes; Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Meditation as well as being a tourist visitor attraction and occasional venue. It is a place where everyone is welcome, where people are encouraged to be creative, a place to commemorate the past and celebrate the future.
Hidden Liverpool was an exciting yearlong project that has explored some of the city's empty buildings by inviting residents and visitors to share memories, stories and images of buildings that they worked in, visited and used but can no longer access. These memories formed the starting point for considering what the future of these buildings could be, developing ideas about how we can unlock the potential of Liverpool's hidden gems. St Luke’s Church was just one of the buildings chosen.
As a company, we would like to be able to help our clients at St. Luke’s Church and other companies who work towards similar goals, improve its influence, popularity and sustainability as an independent space for the arts, from the current level it is presently functioning at, to the seemingly limitless potential the church and gardens has as an exhibition centre and beacon of the arts.
who's with us?
Since the beginning of this project we've always wanted to create a connection with St. Luke’s and the people involved with it. We know from past experiences that when doing a project such as this, if you establish a strong relationship with your client then the process can become quite unenjoyable and a lot of hard work. For this reason we've take an active step to becoming more involved in the church by offering our services as a volunteer. Now the running of the church is mainly dependant on the work of volunteering as all the money made by events goes towards keeping the church alive for public use. Considering the main aim of our piece is to celebrate the church as a vibrant space that can be utilised for several different types of events, from theatre, gigs and workshops to yoga classes, weddings and even moon chanting, I don’t see a better way of getting involved. We are currently in the process of starting our time volunteering at the church and it looks like we'll be working in the new bistro that has been set up within the church to run alongside events. It’s a great addition for the space as it will offer the public and people visiting the church a chance to grab a coffee or cake whilst checking out the space or even just somewhere to sit and enjoy the beautiful architecture.
