A B O U T

On the 9th of April, The Urban Story Tellers will be performing in the beautiful ruins of St Luke’s church in Liverpool City Centre, commonly known by locals as the ‘bombed out church’. Urban Story Tellers will be taking you on a journey of St Luke’s Church, presented through a series of performing arts; devised and scripted performance, poetry and live music. Our performance will incorporate the violent past of the church, its present use in the community and what the future holds for this Landmark of Liverpool.

On May 6th 1941, during World War II, St. Luke’s Church fell victim to the Blitz of Liverpool after an incendiary device hit it. The Blitz of Liverpool was one of the biggest air raids on a British city outside of our capital, due to its importance in the Allied war effort. Since that time, the church has been left as it stands: As a memorial to those who died in the Second World War and because of this, we felt that its history was too powerful to ignore. We will be researching into the devastating events of the ‘bombed out’ church and using this as stimulus to create an insight into its vast history.

In recent news, Liverpool legend Paul McCartney gave a thumbs up to the iconic building, rejoicing that St Luke’s “is a place that encourages people to express themselves”. We will be supporting his statement in our celebration of the regeneration of the church; by rediscovering the diversity of the landmark that has come under scrutiny in recent months.

As a company, we would like to be able to help our clients at St. Luke’s Church improve its influence, popularity and sustainability as an independent space for the arts, from the current level it is presently functioning at, to the seemingly limitless potential the church and gardens has as an exhibition centre to be a beacon for the arts! So get ready to go on an amazing journey through the times and events at the famous bombed out church!
